The wine

Aalto is one of the Ribera del Duero’s great benchmarks, a wine of excellent balance and complexity, full of power and personality, mature and elegant, which owes its virtues to some magnificent grapes of the Tinta Fina (Tempranillo) variety, to the diversity of soils and to the vast experience of Mariano García, the wine maker who for thirty years was in charge of the production of Vega Sicilia wines. Right from the very start, it has been one of the finest examples of a modern Ribera, which has now become a classic, a fundamental Ribera and a wine for those special occasions.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Jancis Robinson

The 2018 Aalto reflects the cooler conditions of the year, with a more austere profile, subtle aromas and a harmonious palate. This is a classic example of modern, ripe and well-oaked Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, which this year feels creamy, juicy and balanced. This follows the path of 2017 with integrated oak (they used only around 20% new oak) and a lively palate in a more drinkable and approachable style. They added some new vineyards from the zone of Boada where the soils are red and the wines bring freshness and lots of fruit. The wine had a shorter maceration with the skins and a softer vinification. This is finer and more balanced, with finesse but still very much recognizable as Aalto. 300,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020.

Mid-deep ruby-purple. Minty oak lift with torrefied caramel and coconut. Orange peel and ripe red fruit. Density of red- and black-cherry palate fruit is just enough to balance the compact, firm tannins. Warming finish, but polished, with plenty of vanilla length.

Aalto

Aalto is the emblematic name of a winery which has become a benchmark in the Ribera del Duero. The extensive experience of Mariano García, who was Vega Sicilia’s winemaker for thirty years, comes through in the powerfulness and complexity of the wines.
