Review

Sassicaia, a true legend since 1968

A deep and intense ruby colour. On the nose its elegance and gentleness are outstanding, featuring a bouquet of sweet ripe black fruits (blueberries, blackcurrants, cassis liqueur) and Mediterranean herbs such as bay, juniper and myrtle. Following on, its spicy hints and balsamic notes remain with us for a long time.

On the palate it appears powerful and concentrated, with the ripe black fruit persisting and complemented by other touches of chocolate, vanilla, quinine and bracken, in a combination which imparts a pleasant vegetal freshness overall. A wine of noble elegance, exquisite balance, with fine tannins seeming to caress the palate. Without a doubt, the fragrance of the Bolgheri and the magic of its terroir are encapsulated in a bottle of Sassicaia.

An excellent choice if you decide to pair it up with elaborate game dishes, especially wild boar.

Surprisingly ready to drink already

But don't try to make the bottle last all evening - it oxidizes fast. We'll keep the other bottle a few more years.

Wine from Tenuta San Guido

Tenuta San Guido

Tenuta San Guido is named after Saint Guido della Gherardesca, a hermit who lived in the vicinity of the winery in the 11th Century. It lies between Livorno and Grosseto, close to the Etruscan coast, in the Maremma region about which the Nobel Prize-winner and poet, Giosuè Carducci, wrote so many verses. This is where, in the 13-kilometre stretch which extends from the hills to the sea, one of the most highly esteemed wines in the world is produced: the Sassicaia. In the 1...
