Protos 27
2022Spec sheet
The wine
Protos 27 2022 is a 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, made by Bodegas Protos — the region's founding winery, established in 1927 by eleven local growers and originally named simply "Ribera del Duero" before ceding that name to the region's regulatory council. This wine honours that history, and it delivers on it: fruit comes from vines around 70 years old at 850 metres altitude, and it spends 16 months in new French oak. It's picked up strong critical support, with scores of 94 from Peñín, 95 from Decanter, 91 from Tim Atkin and 90 from James Suckling for the 2022 vintage, and it holds 4.5/5 across 37 customer reviews.
What does this wine taste like?
Picota cherry red, clean and bright, the nose is highly aromatic and complex, with black fruit and plum alongside toasty oak, vanilla, toffee and deeper tertiary notes of liquorice. On the palate, it's concentrated and rounded, well balanced, with a long, persistent finish — a classic, traditional Ribera style built on real structure rather than raw power.

Drinking and storing
Serve between 16°C and 17°C. With its firm tannins and extended oak ageing, this is a wine that will continue to develop in the bottle, though it's already drinking well thanks to its balance and integration. If opening now, giving it some time to breathe will help unlock its full aromatic range.
Food pairing
Its concentration and structure make it a natural match for stews and casseroles, where the wine's depth can stand up to slow-cooked, savoury flavours, and equally at home with red meat, where its tannins and richness complement a good cut of beef or lamb.

The winery
Bodegas Protos

Protos was founded in 1927 and was the first winery in the wine region known as Ribera del Duero, being its first name precisely that one: Ribera del Duero. In the early 1980s, coinciding with the creation of the Regulatory Council of the area, the winery changed its original name to Bodegas Protos (from the Greek protos, which means first). It ceded its first name to the Regulatory Council, authorising it to use that name to identify the Ribera del Duero denomination of origin....
