Wine from Ribera del Duero

Buy Ribera del Duero Wine Online

Ribera del Duero is Spain's most prestigious red wine region after Rioja — and for many serious wine drinkers, it has already overtaken it. Planted along the high plateau of the Duero River at 750–900 metres above sea level, its vineyards produce Tempranillo (here called Tinto Fino) of exceptional concentration and structure, shaped by extreme continental conditions: scorching summer days, cold nights, and winters that test the vine's limits. The result is wines of deep colour, firm tannins and complex dark fruit that age as well as fine Bordeaux — at a fraction of the price. At Vinissimus, we stock over 250 Ribera del Duero references, from entry-level Robles under £20 to single-vineyard icons from Vega Sicilia, Dominio de Pingus and Aalto.

Featured producers

Vega Sicilia — The most iconic name in Spanish wine and one of the most celebrated estates in the world. Único, the flagship wine, spends a minimum of 10 years ageing before release and can develop for decades. → Shop Vega Sicilia

Dominio de Pingus — Created by Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck in 1995, Pingus became one of Spain's most sought-after wines almost immediately. PSI, the estate's entry-level wine, offers outstanding quality and genuine Ribera character at a more accessible price. → Shop Dominio de Pingus

Aalto — Founded by former Vega Sicilia director Mariano García, Aalto is now one of the most consistently impressive producers in the appellation. The standard Aalto and the single-vineyard PS are both benchmarks. → Shop Aalto

Pago de Carraovejas — One of the most respected family estates in Ribera del Duero, producing structured, age-worthy wines from old vines in the village of Peñafiel. The Cuesta de las Liebres is exceptional in top vintages. → Shop Pago de Carraovejas

Pago de los Capellanes — Consistently excellent across the range, from the everyday Roble to the single-vineyard El Nogal. One of the most reliable names in the appellation for quality at every price point. → Shop Pago de los Capellanes

FAQ

What is Ribera del Duero wine?
Ribera del Duero is a DO (Denominación de Origen) wine region in north-central Spain, running along the Duero River through the provinces of Burgos, Valladolid, Segovia and Soria. It produces almost exclusively red wine from Tempranillo — known locally as Tinto Fino — grown at high altitude (750–900 metres), giving the wines their characteristic intensity, firm tannins and ageing potential. The region gained DO status in 1982 but has roots going back over 2,500 years.

How does Ribera del Duero compare to Rioja?
Both regions are based on Tempranillo, but the wines taste noticeably different. Ribera del Duero tends to produce fuller-bodied, darker, more structured wines with more concentrated dark fruit — black cherry, plum and blackcurrant — and firmer tannins. Rioja is generally softer and more approachable earlier, with a broader range of styles from light, fruit-driven wines to complex, oak-aged Reservas and Gran Reservas. If you enjoy structured, age-worthy reds, Ribera del Duero is often the more rewarding choice.

What vintages of Ribera del Duero should I buy?
2020 and 2019 are the standout recent vintages — both produced wines of exceptional quality across the appellation. For drinking now, 2018 Crianzas and Reservas are in a good place. The 2022 vintage is showing strong early results and is worth buying now for medium-term cellaring. Avoid 2017 from lesser producers; the best estates made fine wine but it was an uneven year.

What food pairs best with Ribera del Duero?
The classic pairing is roast lamb — lechazo (milk-fed lamb) is the local dish and a natural match for the region's structured Tempranillo. Ribera del Duero also works exceptionally well with beef, game, venison, aged hard cheeses (Manchego, Pecorino) and charcuterie. The firm tannins and good acidity mean it holds its own against rich, flavoursome dishes without being overwhelmed.

How long should Ribera del Duero wine be aged?
Roble wines are ready to drink on release and are best within 3–5 years. Crianzas drink well from release but improve for 5–8 years in a good vintage. Reservas benefit from 8–12 years of total age. The top single-vineyard wines from Vega Sicilia, Pingus and Aalto can age 20–30 years or more. As a rule, the higher the Parker or Peñín score, the longer the ageing potential.

Is Ribera del Duero wine good for beginners?
Yes — entry-level Ribera del Duero, particularly Roble and everyday Crianza, is an excellent introduction to structured Spanish red wine. The fruit is generous, the tannins are firm but not harsh, and the wines are very food-friendly. Good starting points under £20 include Pago de los Capellanes Roble, Emilio Moro Finca Resalso and Tinto Pesquera Crianza.
