The wine

Marcos Eguren has always championed the Tinta de Toro, a grape with a rough disposition like the countryside where it grows, with plenty of structure, yet lovely and generous when one learns 'to tame its wild side', to give it subtlety and distinction. Only then will it reveal that elegance complemented by powerfulness which we're looking for, that fruit-filled freshness, that balance and expressivity which brings so much pleasure to our palates. This is the philosophy that lies behind Almirez, the youngest of this Toro wine family, attractively represented on its label by an almirez, a metal mortar in which so many magic mixtures of spices and other ingredients have been concocted in kitchens since time immemorial.

What does this wine taste like?

It displays an intense Picota cherry colour followed by delicious enveloping aromas of fruit in liqueur (cherries and plums) embellished with herbal tones and spicy notes. Ripe black fruit smoothly integrates toasted tones from the oak, respecting the sensations of primary aromas from the vines. Coffee blends in with flowers, preparing us for velvety, juicy, and somewhat restrained sensations in the mouth. It has a strong liqueur taste but with sweet tannins which pleasantly delights the palate, while a comforting warmth from the barrels which are toasted less each year makes Almírez a wine which seems to lose tannicity with every vintage as it gains in balance and depth. A long and flavoursome finish leaves an amazing sensation of harmony.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Jancis Robinson

The 2020 Almirez comes from 41.7 hectares of vines ranging between 15 and 65 years of age. It fermented for 20 days, followed by malolactic in barrel and 14 months in French oak barrels, 30% of them new. The wine is quite approachable and has finesse; it's fine-boned, more fluid and refined than other years. The rains in August resulted in larger grapes with more juice, and the wine is quite approachable even at this young age. It's expressive, clean and powerful (the place is like that) and with 14.81% alcohol that goes unnoticed. It has abundant, fine-grained tannins and some creaminess and spiciness from the time in barrel, developing some mintiness with time in the glass; later, there's more licorice and even aniseed and fennel aromas. 88,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022.

Deep crimson. Dark fruit – elderberry rather than cassis – and a touch of char and coffee. Dark and savoury on the palate, with a savoury quality to the oak overlay. Dry finesse even in youth. Too oaky for my taste but harmonious in its own style.

The Eguren family, originally from La Rioja, discovered Toro and has stayed with it, persuaded by the land’s potential and by the Tinta de Toro, a grape with great structure, able to convey the minerality of the soils but with a strong character that needs understanding and “taming”. Marcos Eguren understands it perfectly and proved this with the wines of his first project in the region, Numanthia Termes, powerful wines, always subtle and elegant. Teso La...
