The wine

Mature and tannic, in keeping with its clear-cut Ribera core, Parada de Atauta always amazes due to its great finesse. The Atauta hallmark. It’s one of the best examples of a Ribera that’s powerful yet accessible, a good Ribera starting point which enables us to get to know the denomination’s most westerly corner. It’s the location of the vineyards in one of the Ribera’s coolest areas, the province of Soria, which has a lot to do with the wine’s fresh profile. Naturally also playing its part is the fine work of the wine-making team, which has been bringing forward the date of harvesting over the years, as well as having reduced the percentage of new barrels and introduced concrete as an element in the wine-making process.

What does this wine taste like?

Aromas of cassis, earthy notes, wafts of tobacco and toasted bread, and subtle undertones of caramel. Its entry on the palate is sweet and, although it favours decanting, you can tell this is an agreeable wine just by uncorking the bottle; flavoursome, rounded, with well-integrated ageing notes and a slight choclatey bitterness. Warm, glyceric, balsamic, silky and seamless.

Drinking and storing

The quality of this wine is patently obvious and it can be laid down for some 6-7 years. It also comes over as straightforward, direct and, unlike its winery siblings, very accessible right from the start.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

There's darker fruit and more concentration and tannin in the 2019 Parada de Atauta, denoting a warmer and drier year when the wine finished at 15% alcohol and is more powerful than the 2020 I tasted next to it. The aging was slightly longer, 14 months, and they used 20% new barrels for it. It's a powerful and concentrated version of Parada. It was bottled in September 2021.

Vineyards

The Dominio de Atauta vineyards are located in the most easterly area of the denomination, in the province of Soria, in an incredibly harsh environment that appears almost forgotten and abandoned, yet one that still has much to offer.

Dominio de Atauta

The Dominio de Atauta winery is located in the Atauta valley in the province of Soria in central Spain. They own 21 hectares of vines and supervise another 22, meaning they manage around 600 plots altogether at altitudes of over 1000 metres. The winery's goal is to demonstrate the full potential of their pre-phylloxera Tinto Fino vines with ages ranging between 85 and 150 years old. The Atauta valley has a history of over 500 years of winemaking in extremely severe conditions,...
