The wine

Made from a selection of the best grapes from all the parcels, the Selección Especial has become the best example of the Abadía wines and the one which has received the most and the highest awards. A wine brimming with youthfulness, intense in colour and on the nose; we suggest decanting a few minutes before serving to enjoy the wine to its full extent.

In appearance it is a very intense dark red Morello cherry colour, practically opaque. On the nose it exudes an aroma of great intensity, highlighting black fruit, toasty notes and with a floral hint. Medium-bodied on the palate, with just the right amount of acidity, it is well-charged with fruit and flavoursome, showing immense persistence.

Aged for 18 months in French and American oak barrels.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

2018 was a cooler year with more rain and higher yields, and the 2018 Selección Especial—77% Tempranillo, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Syrah, 1% Merlot, 0.8% Petit Verdot and 0.3% Garnacha—shows very harmonious and better integrated oak than the 2017. Despite having similar analytical data, the wine comes through as fresher, more balanced, more fluid and with a finer texture given the quality of the tannins. 532,607 bottles produced. It was bottled in May and June 2020.

Abadía Retuerta

Bodega Abadía Retuerta’s name comes from two words that define and describe the land: Ribula Torta which means a “winding river bank”. The first written reference alluding to the importance of the Abadía vineyards dates back to the 17th Century, and shows that the wine sold by the monks who were living there dominated the market in Valladolid, Castile’s largest city. More recently, in the 1970s, the former owners pulled up the vines growing...
