Marqués de Murrieta 2021
Marqués de Murrieta 2021 is one of the most renowned red wines from the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin. Produced by the historic Marqués de Murrieta winery at its iconic Finca Ygay estate in Rioja Alta, it represents the classic Rioja style with greater precision and freshness.
The 2021 vintage in Rioja was rated as Very Good by the DOCa Rioja Regulatory Council, following a balanced growing cycle and an excellent harvest. This translates into a wine with good concentration, defined acidity, and great capacity for evolution.
It is made mainly from Tempranillo, accompanied by Graciano, Mazuelo, and Garnacha from the winery's own vineyards.
What does this wine taste like?
The nose shows medium-high intensity. Fresh red fruit, cherry, and raspberry predominate, with a background of ripe black fruit. Notes of vanilla, cocoa, sweet spices, and a slight balsamic nuance from oak ageing appear.
On the palate, it is structured and balanced. The tannins are firm and well integrated. The acidity brings freshness and supports the whole. There are flavours of ripe fruit, toasted notes, and a long finish with hints of spice and light mineral notes.
This is an elegant Rioja wine, persistent and with good depth, suitable for both immediate consumption and ageing.

Winemaking
The harvest is carried out manually in boxes to preserve the integrity of the grapes. Each variety ferments separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for approximately 8 to 10 days.
After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in American oak barrels. It is then blended and left to refine in the bottle before being released for sale.

Vineyards
Finca Ygay
The grapes come from Finca Ygay, located between 320 and 485 metres above sea level in Rioja Alta.
The soils are mainly calcareous clay, with good drainage capacity. This combination of altitude, orientation, and soil composition allows for slow ripening, favouring wines with structure, balance, and natural freshness.

Marqués de Murrieta

Marqués de Murrieta is one of the most historic Spanish wineries. Its origins date back to 1852 when Luciano de Murrieta started trading his wines in the New World. Today, 170 years later, the impressive Ygay estate seems untouched by the passage of time, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Nowadays, Vicente D. Cebrián-Sagarriga, the present Count of Creixell, manages the winery with his sister Cristina and a skilled young team which understands how to...
