Wine Muga Reserva Selección Especial 2016
|Type||Red Wine Reserva|
|Alcohol content i||14.5%|
|Bottle size and vintage||0.75 L - 2016|
The Selección Especial is perhaps the most easily paired with food of the Muga reds, a wine which combines the past and the future to perfection. On the one hand, it takes from classic wines its ability for evolution, its complexity and its delightful elegance, while on the other hand, its marked fruit-forward character comes to the fore, along with its fresh, spicy touches, more typically found in modern wines.
The grapes come from old vineyards planted on terraces and the must ferments using native yeasts in oak vats. It then undergoes an ageing period of 26 months in barrels made in Muga's own cooperage. Finally, it's clarified with egg white and left to repose in bottle for a minimum of twelve months.
It appears an intense cherry colour and has a spicy, mature nose. On the palate it exhibits fantastic acidity which bodes a great future, as well as some pleasant coffee hints through the retronasal passage; it comes over as corpulent but accessible, almost lactic. Traces of liquorice and tobacco are added to touches of cloves and vanilla adding up to a stunning aromatic display. Its finish is long and delicately bitter. It will continue to develop.

Somewhat typical of Muga, they don't do things by halves, as I've always felt their red Crianza is really of Reserva standard. And so it is with this beauty - which is really Gran Reserva standard - just without the over-oakiness that can overpower that classification too often. This is a truly silky, intense wine, combining huge depth but great balance and structure. It's a fabulous vintage and given great care and attention here. It is also surprisingly fresh and drinkable now, but will easily cellar happily for another 15 years +. Astonishing value given the superb quality of this wine.by: André H. This is a lovely silky elegant wine, without being lean, that's because of its 14% alcohol content and its very good wine year. We drank this with 4 people. 3 Of us tasted and smelled a touch of aniseed. Normally I'm not keen on that, but with this wine it did not put me off. It has a very good balance and we alI enjoyed it very much!by: Michael Garcia (26/02/2019) - Vintage 2014
One of my favourite
A proper bottle of Spanish red wine. I love this wine, the year is a lot better than the earlier ones also and this is definitely noticeable.by: Stuart (24/10/2017) - Vintage 2011
excellent wine any time.
A full bodied smooth wine as you would expect from this Bodega who make consistently excellent wines. I would recommend highly.by: David Lloyd (04/09/2019) - Vintage 2014
An excellent Rioja - This is an intense Rioja made from predominately Tempranillo grapes
Silky and crisp with fine tannins, giving a velvety and chalky texture. I would certainly recommend this for a nice occasion.
