One of the oldest wineries in Abruzzo, Illuminati represents the sunniest, most Mediterranean and most dynamic interpretation of this region. Tradition and territory meet here, and much of the rebirth of Abruzzo's viticulture started from here. Family-run, the winery is based in Controguerra, in the Mediterranean hills of the far north of the region. Every year, in addition to the brilliant Lumen and Zanna, it produces some of the best daily wines in the whole of Italy: and it is no coincidence that the Illuminati family's winery now plays a central role in the national and international wine market.

Ilico is perhaps the wine that best embodies this incredible balance between quality and competitiveness. A single-variety Montepulciano that rests in large 25 hectolitre Slavonian oak casks for a year and ends its evolution in the bottle for another 8-10 months, while at the same time coming out on the market at a price of no more than 10 euros is an incredibly risky challenge. Which at Illuminati was a resounding success.

Proof of the pudding are the awards, such as Gambero Rosso’s Tre Bicchieri, but also the tasting, which is the undisputed judge in these cases. Robust and solid, Ilico is bright ruby red in colour, tending to purple in its youth. On the nose it expresses hints of red fruit and liquorice, cherry, plum, Mediterranean scrub and spices. On the palate it reveals all the class of typical Montepulciano but refined by masterful hands. Full-bodied, with tannins that are never tamed but are well developed, it has a finish of spices and an unexpected wine finish length. An ideal wine with earthy dishes, perfect with semi-matured cheeses such as Sardinian pecorino.

Best value wine on this website?

The price to quality ratio on this one is incredible. Quite full bodied and lush without veering into fruit bomb territory - tasted blind this would easily pass for a deal at double the price.
