The wine

Quinta Apolonia is the second white wine from Belondrade. It is the result of blending two wines that are different although from the same grape varietal: the Verdejo. The first is produced from grapes grown in the bodega's youngest vineyards and is slowly fermented in stainless steel tanks under temperature-controlled conditions. The second (almost a third of the coupage) is from wine left to mature for three months on its lees.

This Verdejo wine reveals most clearly the vegetal aromas characteristic of the varietal used in its production, as well as stone fruit (peach and apricot) and a pleasantly refreshing citrus background. On the palate all the richness of the heat comes through. Here is a generous, enveloping, glycerine-touched wine, creamy and unctuous, with a fine acidity that provides a distinct freshness and long-lasting aromas.

We are certainly encountering here a most individual perception of the Rueda Verdejo (although for marketing reasons it does not fall within the D.O) from one of the most highly acclaimed wineries of the region that is definitely worthwhile discovering.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The 2022 Quinta Apolonia is going to be released already as the market is moving fast, fermentations have been quick and easy and the wine was bottled a couple of weeks before I tasted it. It was a year marked by very warm temperatures in the summer and lack of rain. They started the harvest very early, in late August, and harvested for one month; it was a complex harvest, as some vineyards had to be harvested over up to five different points of time. They had to sort and discard, and yields were low and production lower than other years. The wines are a little riper and more advanced. This has a golden color and an open, expressive nose of peach and bay leaf with some rose petals too, a little exotic with notes reminiscent of Moscatel or even Gewurztraminer. It has a gentle mouthfeel with lower acidity too. There are 77,000 bottles and 2,320 magnums of this wine. It was bottled in November 2022.

Belondrade

The Belondrade winery was founded in 1994 by Didier Belondrade, a Frenchman who became enamoured with Spain. His objective was to produce an excellent white wine inspired by the great Burgundy whites, using Rueda’s traditional grape variety, the Verdejo. For several years he worked in rented premises in Nava del Rey, until he was able to open the doors of his new winery in 2000, situated on the actual estate on the outskirts of La Seca. The winery was designed by the French...
