The wine

Pago de Valdoneje Mencía is a complete, fresh and enveloping Mencia with an impressive varietal character. Marcos García still follows the advice his grandfather Antonio gave him for creating great wines. His unoaked single-varietal Pago de Valdoneje Mencía is no exception and, as with his other wines, Marcos has achieved a wonderfully expressive nose and a rounded and flavoursome mouth. A wine that gains more and more praise and fans year after year, sure to delight at an unbeatable price.

What does this wine taste like?

In the glass, Pago de Valdoneje Mencía displays a magnificent and intense red colour with purple glints. Fresh in the nose, it delights with aromas of wild fruit such as blackberries and raspberries as well as the usual smoky notes from the soils of Bierzo. After standing for a moment in the glass, refreshing herbal aromas appear, reminiscent of mint and liquorice. Juicy and well-structured in the mouth, it shows incredible depth for such a young wine and tantalizing fruit is always present. Despite its youth, it has very fine tannins which ensure the sweet primary flavours do not take over the wine.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Jancis Robinson, Parker, and Suckling

Tasted blind. Youthful, simple and vivid with a very refreshing mouthfeel. A pleasant and easy-drinking wine. Uncomplicated and quite a bargain. This is a producer to follow.

The textbook young unoaked Mencía 2023 Pago de Valdoneje has notes of berries, herbs and licorice, with a very fine texture and round tannins. It's an unoaked varietal Mencía, among the best in its class. It's juicy and ripe, keeping the poise and balance with 13.5% alcohol. 85,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2024.

Lots of crushed black pepper and cloves with berries and other spices. Medium body with plenty of fruit and a juicy finish. Slightly chewy. Drink now.

Vinos Valtuille

Vinos Valtuille

Vinos Valtuille is a small, familiar-run winery, with Marcos García Alba one of the new-wave wine-produers and bodega owners in Bierzo, that took on the challenge of creating quality wines at the beginning of 2000, making an important investment in installations, facilities and plenty of technical resources. Marcos launched onto the market under the brand name of Pago de Valdoneje, giving rise to a young, single varietal Mencía wine that has been growing in reputation out there...
