The wine

Produced using Mencia grapes from vines over 90 years old, Quite is packed with a wonderful typicity and character hard to believe at this very affordable price. A limited production of fewer than 20,000 bottles a year is usually only available on the market for a few months before they have all been snatched up. Anyone who has ever tried a glass of Quite cannot help buying this wine again, seduced by its soothing herbal aromas and sweet spices. As you pour it into the glass, its bright cherry-red colour leaves no doubt that you are about to fall in love with the wine. An almost Atlantic-like freshness becomes even clearer on decanting. All in all, a fresh, floral, personal and velvety wine which may even bring to mind memories of a great Rhône wine.

What does this wine taste like?

Displaying a dense and dark purple colour, Quite delights us with a smoky nose embellished with aromas of scrubland, ash, blue flowers and deliciously ripe fruits of the forest. It is juicy and fresh in the mouth with a seductive mouthfeel and a degree of acidity which means it flows elegantly on the palate and has a promising future. A splendid blend of minerality and fruitiness, it offers the most pleasant and accessible side of the Mencia variety. Agile, elegant and easy to interpret, it is a wine ready to be admired and enjoyed from the very first moment. Elegant wooden notes from the eight months it spends ageing in wooden vats resonate with every sip alongside an elegantly bitter sensation.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The red 2021 Quite was produced with fruit from Valtuille de Abajo, from old vines, with the fine-boned, aerial and fresh profile of the 2021s that are more ethereal and vibrant. In 2021, she started to use some stems and some white grapes, which makes the wine even more fluid and vibrant. This is very elegant and fine-boned, quite ethereal within the Mencía on clay profile, with roundness and clout. It has a moderate 12% alcohol. She's looking forward to a longer élevage for this wine, which is now under one year in oak vat because she needs the vat for the following harvest, and she should be able to do that in the new winery. 22,000 bottles produced.

Winemaking

On drinking, it is easy to appreciate that it has not undergone an excessive extraction process (just a week-long maceration). With an experienced background working at several of the great wineries (such as Clos Erasmus, Álvaro Palacios, Romanée-Conti, and Raúl Pérez), Verónica Ortega is a firm believer that subtlety is a key element behind all great wines. With this in mind, her wines are always aged in large pre-used wooden vats or clay jars, as is the case with Quite.

Verónica Ortega is one of the great promises of Spanish wine. Originally from Cadiz, she left her Andalusian homeland after finishing her oenology studies at the University of Cadiz to embark on an intense learning path that would lead her to work in different countries and always alongside some of the greatest names in wine. In Priorat, Ortega harvested grapes alongside Daphne Glorian and Álvaro Palacios. She later worked in a biodynamic winery in New Zealand and...
