Review

There are landscapes that make an impression and Bierzo is definitely one of them, a patchwork of small parcels, steep hillsides and differing microclimates, with a red grape, the Mencia, that offers fruit-forward, smooth, elegant wines. Here we have one: Finca La Cuesta, a wine whose name just about says it all. Of the winery’s three reds, it is the one made with grapes from vineyards at medium altitude: using the youngest grapevines, Luna Beberide produces their Mencia Joven; from those growing at an altitude of 500-600 metres and aged over 60 years old comes this Finca La Cuesta; and from the top of the hillside, at around 700-800 metres, emanates their wine Art, which is the most concentrated and mineral.

Finca La Cuesta is a fruit-laden wine, smooth, elegant and mineral (the soils are clay-calcareous and decomposed slate), and has a very accessible nature, which is particularly pleasing. In appearance it is glyceric, a dark Picota cherry colour, clean and of medium density, and both on the nose and palate it is complex and fine. It displays a wide range of notes, to include leather, balsamic, mineral and spicy, combining well with the fresh aromas of wild fruit and honeycomb. There is a smooth but vigorous entry on the palate, it has spirit and is intense and fruit-forward, with good structure. This is a wine that shows purity and nobility. It has remarkable power and tannins that augur well for a good evolution, and, if we have to find a weakness, we might point out that it is not very long, as its finish is a little impaired due to the presence of rather edgy yet not harsh acidity, which will eventually fade over time, but compensated by that delightful complexity which increases even more with some aeration in the glass. A fine Mencia and a fine wine.

A good smooth wine, good value for money

smooth pleasant wine with good level of dark fruit. Some blackberries, vanilla, hints ofautumn earth, and soft tannins. This is a good Mencia.

Delicious and great value

This young red from the Bierzo is a big hitter in terms of RCP. Lashings of vibrant red fruit and no obtrusive oak. Just what you want from a Bierzo Mencía.
