The wine

How many wines of this quality can you find at this price? Quite a few, to be fair. What about handcrafted ones? Still several. Well then, produced from the fruit of a hundred-year-old vines? Hardly any, to be honest. Unculín is one of them, one of the best. A wine which is much more serious and profound than you might expect from one so reasonably-priced. What’s more, from the 2019 vintage onwards, its character is even fresher and more fluid thanks to the contribution of white grapes such as Godello, Doña Blanca and Palomino, as was done in past times. There’s also the addition of 5% Alicante Bouschet (Garnacha Tintorera). It used to be a very good choice for getting to know a Mencía in all its purity, but now it’s an excellent ambassador for Bierzo’s reds as a whole. The bodega’s entry level and an introductory wine to the Bierzo.

What does this wine taste like?

Unculín is utterly charming due to the juiciness of its fruit. Wild berry fruit with fresh, floral aromas. It’s particularly flavoursome, with rounded tannins and a silky texture. A delicious, easily drinkable, medium-bodied wine.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Jancis Robinson and Parker

One of those noses that make your knees buckle a tiny bit. Raspberry cheesecake? Spine-tingling purity. Just a tiny tiny bit on the wild side, but only just. This wine is like that soft kiss on the lips from your love that sends an electric shock through your whole body. wild strawberries picked so ripe and warm from summer sun that they almost melt on your fingers and you have to lick them off. And then, right at the end, cool wet slate and graphite minerality. But you’re so seduced by the fruit that you barely notice it.

— Tamlyn Currin (21/09/2021) Vintage 2019 - 17 JANCIS ROBINSON

The 2021 Unculín is now a vino de villa from Valtuille de Abajo and is labeled as such. This is the entry-level red from over 100 separate plots, old vines normally planted with a Mencía field blend, mainly on stone and clay soils. It fermented with some 15% full clusters and matured in stainless steel, finishing with a couple of months in foudre. This is a young wine that is characterful and a bit wild, with notes of ink, berries, flowers and herbs. It has moderate ripeness, 13% alcohol and a tender, silky and balanced palate. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2022.
