Berola is one of the most modern and international wines from Bodegas Borsao, a reference winery in the DO Campo de Borja appellation. It is made mainly from red Grenache and rounded off with juicy Syrah, both collected from vineyards planted at heights of between 600 and 700 metres on stony, loam chalk-clay soils. The Grenache vines are between 35 and 60 years old, whereas the Syrah ones are already over a decade old.
The two varieties are fermented separately and then blended so as to obtain the best finished wine. Aged in both Bordeaux and American oak barrels, the resulting wine has an intense cherry colour with wonderful violet glints. Clear aromas of ripe plums meet hints of spicy cake in the nose over a balsamic backdrop of scrubland. After standing in the glass, aromas of cranberries, sloes, carob beans and smoke appear. Fruity and well-balanced in the mouth with an elegant earthy feeling, the perfect amount of acidity gives it a wild seductive touch. Berola offers abundant but smooth tannins and well-integrated alcohol thanks to excellent work carried out both in the vineyards and the winery. In its long lingering finish the taste of cocoa, cherries in liqueur, and comforting toasted hints appear.
A great wine which clearly says where it comes from, Borsao Berola is proud of its origins but is also a product of modern winemaking. It takes its name from the old medieval name for the Veruela Monastery, the authentic birthplace of winemaking in DO Campo de Borja. At the same time it looks to New World wine styles to offer an image of this appellation brimming with typicity but with international ambitions.

Very Nice smelling wine with a rich but smooth taste. Top bargain from a less known part of Spain for me.

Wine for food!
Our motivation to taste this wine was based on earlier good experience with Bodegas Borsao. This is a sophisticated offering. Grenache is the dominant grape but the blend of Syrah and Cabernet give it a sophistication and intensity. In our case, an excellent accompaniment to a rich, southern Italian lamb and tomato casseruola.
