FAQ
What is the difference between Rioja Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva?
Crianza is aged for at least three years in total, including a minimum of one year in oak barrels. Reserva spends a minimum of three years ageing, with at least one year in oak and six months in the bottle. Gran Reserva is the top classification, requiring a minimum of five years' ageing — at least two years in oak barrels and two years in bottle. In practice, many Rioja producers age their wines significantly longer than the minimum requirements.
What grape varieties are used in Rioja wine?
The main grape in red Rioja is Tempranillo, which typically makes up 60–90% of most blends. It is often combined with Garnacha (Grenache), Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano for added complexity. White Rioja is traditionally made from Viura, though Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía also appear. Modern-style white Riojas increasingly use barrel fermentation to produce rich, complex whites.
What food pairs well with Rioja wine?
Red Rioja pairs beautifully with roast lamb, chorizo, grilled beef, aged cheeses like Manchego, and slow-cooked stews. Crianza is versatile enough for pasta and pizza; Reserva and Gran Reserva suit richer, more complex dishes. White Rioja works well with fish, seafood, roast chicken and creamy sauces.
What is the best Rioja wine to buy as a gift?
A Rioja Reserva or Gran Reserva from an iconic bodega is always a well-received wine gift. Reliable choices include Muga Reserva, La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904, Marqués de Murrieta Reserva, and CVNE Imperial Reserva — all available at Vinissimus with UK delivery and optional gift packaging.
