The wine

Part of the Eguren family’s Viñedos de Páganos estate in Rioja Alavesa, the El Puntido vineyard was planted over 35 years ago in mineral-rich, calcareous-clay soils, with vines covering 25 hectares at an altitude of 600m. First released in 2001, this wine has become a new classic, distinctly modern in style and paving the way for the other famous name associated with this winery: La Nieta. The harvesting of healthy, ripe grapes is carried out manually, with a further rigorous selection of clusters and berries at the sorting table. Malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak Bordelaise barrels, with the wine remaining on its lees for the first four months, before spending 18 months in new French oak.

This is a concentrated and intense 100% Tempranillo wine, deep cherry red in colour, with noticeable mineral aromas on the complex nose of fresh ripe fruit and well-integrated oak. While on the palate, toasty and mineral hints mingle with flavoursome fruit, showing a good balance, a powerful structure and fine expression.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The 2018 El Puntido is lighter and fresher, with very fine tannins. The wine is in the process of being integrated after spending 16 months in brand-new French oak barrels and resting in tank for six months before bottling. These are powerful and concentrated wines, but in 2018 they are a little lighter. I like them better. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in Dec. 2020. This is usually the last wine to be bottled before the end of the year.

Viñedos de Páganos

The Eguren family has historical connections with wine-making dating back to 1870 and now five generations have been intrinsically involved with vine cultivation in La Rioja. Expert knowledge has been accrued then passed on, with technological advances in production warmly accepted but without totally superseding traditional ideas that are based on an overriding respect for the soil and the vine. This is a contemporary-styled winery in the medieval town of Laguardia, and home...
