The wine

Sandy soils, pebbles and ungrafted grapevines (pre-phylloxera) … that is what Toro is like; a region of wine production dating back to ancient times and poor quality lands, a neighbour of the Ribera del Duero. Today there are many producers who are taking a keen interest in this region, but in 1998 the Telmo Rodríguez Company was one of the first to launch an original Toro wine, his Dehesa Gago, produced from vineyards rented out to vine growers with whom he would maintain a close relationship.

Emblematic and highly renowned wineries such as Vega Sicilia, Mauro and Lurton own a second estate nowadays in Toro, where they make great wines - full-bodied and dense wines.

Recently released Dehesa Gago appears a lovely rich purplish colour, while on the nose it proves delightful, revealing delicious black berry fruits. This is a wine that has had no contact with oak and satisfies the palate with its juicy, thoroughly enjoyable and, needless to say, overwhelmingly fresh touch. A fantastic example of a Toro wine with fruit and power in abundance, but not forgetting that dynamic Atlantic aspect. The slightly rough edges we might find when it is first released are due to recent bottling. It will always benefit from a little time and some aeration.

The firm they set up, Compañía de Vinos de Telmo Rodríguez, has grown based on the pair's travels around winemaking regions to understand and experience Spain as a complex and unique winemaking country with incredibly diverse and rich landscapes.   Top quality winemaking traditions, experience in...
