Review
Located on the south-west side of the Montalcino hill, a few kilometres from Castelnuovo dell'Abate and the fascinating Romanesque abbey of Sant'Antimo, Castelgiocondo is one of the most important, oldest and deeply rooted wineries in the territory. The Marchesi de' Frescobaldi are a Florentine family who have dedicated themselves for thirty generations to the production of great Tuscan wines: since 1989 they have owned the Castelgiocondo estate, the nerve centre of the production of one of the most representative Brunellos of the entire denomination.
Castelgiocondo is a red wine of great structure, elegant and balanced. It is a Brunello of modern conception, because it rests partly in barrique, and therefore gives a softer and more persuasive approach to Sangiovese. Bright ruby red in colour, the bouquet enthuses with intense notes of red fruit including blackberry, currant, plum and blueberry, followed by toasted hints of vanilla, tobacco and coffee. Balsamic and eucalyptus notes emerge in the finish. On the palate it is warm, soft and balanced, with dense and elegant tannins that blend in well in the structure, also supported by a nice acidity. The finish is long and persistent with slight fruity hints in the aftertaste. Excellent with stews, long-cooked meat dishes and mature cheeses.
