Review

Casa Castillo Vino de Finca joined the mid-level range of Jumilla wines with the 2015 vintage, placing itself between the youngest single-variety wine and their estate wines. Most of its fruit comes from chiefly Monastrell (95%) vines which are over 30 years old. Partly destemmed bunches of grapes ferment with local yeast in concrete tanks underground and then age in 5000-litre oak barrels for a year.

It offers a strong and opaque red colour and is intense and expressive in the nose, blending aromas of wild fruit jams with hints of stone dust over a lactic background. In the mouth it is both pleasant and firm, with tannins which seem to float over a soft layer of fruit and delicate blue flowers. It is somewhat liqueur-like, spicy and elegantly herbal, but over time will find a definitive balance. Standing in the glass, aromas of cherries, Kuhri's blackberry liqueur, and liquorice appear and its spices become more noticeable. It has a bitter, fresh and lingering finish, producing all the complexity of a great wine and the textures of chalky soils for a very affordable price. A fact held out by its success: the first vintage sold out in just 2 months.

A very good wine for its age, well balanced addition of Garnacha to monastral

Very easy drinking and enjoyable red wine, ideal for warm summer evenings as an aperitif before dinner. A welcome addition to the case castillio range that I already enjoy

Always reliable. A great wine

I can see why this gets Parker points. Used to be better value, but the word has obviously got out! We tend to order a few of these every order as a treat

Wine from Casa Castillo

Casa Castillo

Casa Castillo was founded in 1941, when Don José Sánchez-Cerezo acquired the estate with the aim of exploiting the rosemary of the mount. Inside the same property was an old winery that, in 1985, the second generation of the family decided to restart. Thus began a new project that included the restructuring of the vineyard and the planting of new varieties. In 1991, the winery building was renovated and two years later the first wine was released. Currently, Casa Castillo...
