The wine

One of La Rioja's finest wines, a high expression wine, dense, fruit-forward, very limited production and only produced in the best vintages.

A dark cherry, garnet red colour and dense, with violet hues on the rim, the nose has good intensity and is clean and unblemished. In the foreground, there is an attractive aromatic display of perfectly ripe black fruit, some earthy hints, balsamic touches, gentle spicy wafts and lactic notes. The entry is immediately good, then diminishing a little inside the mouth, but gradually acquiring more volume towards the finish. Flavoursome, and laden with a copious amount of fruit, it shows good acidity and length, with great structure and highly polished tannins.

Matured for 26 months in American oak barrels and, subsequently, for a further 20 months in bottle.

Jean Pineau, the master winemaker at Château Lanessan in the Haut Medoc, gave his professional advice to the then sixth Marquis of Riscal regarding the production of wines following the French system, therefore abandoning the rough and rather unrefined style of Rioja wine and thus establishing La Rioja's first modern...
