The wine
The most profound and elegant of Artadi's parcel wines. A wine with fresh and vibrant minerality, a firm structure and some mature, ripe tannins.
Summary of Juan Carlos López de Lacalle's evaluation of the 2015 vintage
The 2015 vintage year began its cycle with a cold and rainy winter, with snow present and low temperatures that enabled the accumulation of important water reserves. Some sporadic rain showers in spring and during the summer, accompanied by high temperatures, brought on very rapid plant growth, which gave rise to an abundance of foliage; in the month of June, rainfall lasting for six days caused problems with flowering. During the months of August and September, the temperatures were rather lower than average, by two degrees in fact, and rain was recorded yet again in September. Broadly speaking, these were the weather conditions of a year which has resulted in wines that express the sweetness of an early onset of maturity and the freshness of a slow ripeness at the end of the cycle. The 2015 wines are well defined, clear and transparent chromatically, bright cherry-red in colour and full of light, intense aromas of red fruit on the nose, notes of liquorice, aniseed and fresh citrus fruits. Wines that are powerful yet subtle, with a graceful texture, sweet but firm tannins and considerable persistence on the palate. Crystal clear, delicate and elegant wines.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Parker, Parker, and Parker
The bottled 2022 El Carretil still shows faint notes of toast, but they are a lot more integrated than last year. Of all their vineyards, this one has more active limestone, and the palate has marked chalkiness and what Carlos López de la Calle calls "reactive" tannins, along with energy and a sensation of freshness. It was bottled with 14.68% alcohol, a pH of 3.57 and 4.95 grams of acidity. 6,000 bottles were filled in June 2024.
The nose of the 2021 El Carretil is an explosion of flowers; it's aromatic, perfumed, open, expressive and super elegant, clean, nuanced and showy. It has a seamless palate with very fine tannins, ethereal, with lots of energy and light. This has to be the finest vintage of El Carretil to date. Today, this hits the bull's-eye. Bravo! 5,300 bottles were filled in May 2023.
The 2020 El Carretil is fresh and fruit-driven with very fine, chalky tannins from the very high limestone and silt content in the soil, and it has the elegance of the sand component of the "salagón" soils. I found very good precision and elegance in this wine, from a vineyard that behaves well in less warm years and suffers in dry conditions. However, I found the wine to be spectacular, with balance and freshness, and it's very clean and fine-boned. It should develop nicely in bottle. 5,000 bottles were filled in June 2022.
The 2019 El Carretil was produced with Tempranillo from a plot of 3.64 hectares planted in the village of Laguardia at three different times—1930, 1975 and 1988—on limestone, sandstone and silt soils with up to 18% active limestone. It fermented in open-top oak vats and went through malolactic fermentation in barrel, where it was kept for nine months. It's mineral, it has energy and tension, it's not heavy, and it has freshness and acidity. It's serious and has very fine, abundant tannins and great balance that should make it age nicely in bottle. 5,000 bottles were filled in June 2021.

A real wow-wine!
100% organic Tempranillo from the Rioja, from 80 years old vines, with loads of power, complexity and longevity. Probably at its peak in twenty or so years but already very enjoyable now. A real wow-wine that was rated from 96 to 100 points by the most renown critics

The winery
Artadi

Bodegas Artadi is, in fact, the name by which the Cosecheros Alaveses cooperative is known, a well-orchestrated project that started up in 1985, in which several vine-growing associates became involved to show that cosechero (young red) wine could also prove to be great wine. They were successful, with their cosecheros and all the other wines they have added to their catalogue. During the 1990s, under the direction of Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, the winery saw its prestige...
