The wine

Pingus 2021

Pingus 2021 is one of the great icons of Spanish wine. It originates in the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, from the Dominio de Pingus winery, the personal project of Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck.

It is a high-end red wine, made exclusively from Tempranillo grapes from selected old vines. It is a wine with very limited production, sought after by collectors and lovers of the world's great wines.

The 2021 vintage stands out for its balance and precision. If you are thinking of buying a prestigious, internationally renowned wine online with great ageing potential, Pingus is one of the most recognised labels in Ribera del Duero.

Its price reflects its exclusivity, low production and global recognition. It is a wine for those seeking a unique experience.

What does this wine taste like?

In the glass, it has a deep cherry red colour, with a high rim and clean brightness.

The nose is intense and precise. Aromas of ripe black fruit, cherry and plum appear, accompanied by subtle floral notes, fine spices and mineral hints. The wood is perfectly integrated.

On the palate, it is broad and enveloping. It has firm but polished tannins, balanced acidity and a silky texture. The concentration is remarkable, but it maintains its freshness.

The finish is long and persistent, with hints of fruit, spices and a mineral background that adds depth.

It is a structured, elegant wine with great complexity.

Drinking and storing

Recommended serving temperature: 16-18 ºC.

It is best to decant it before serving, especially if it is young, so that it can express itself more fully.

The 2021 vintage has ageing potential. It can evolve for many years in the bottle under the right conditions. It is an ideal wine for special celebrations or to form part of a collection.

If you are looking for a wine to enjoy now, it offers pleasure from its youth. If you prefer to wait, time will work in your favour.

16ºC

Food pairing

Pingus 2021 pairs well with dishes of great intensity and structure:

  • Roast lamb
  • Suckling pig
  • Grilled red meat
  • Traditional stews
  • Aged cheeses

It also works well with contemporary cuisine based on precise technique and quality ingredients.

This wine is designed for the table and for special occasions.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The bottled 2020 Pingus has settled, and the strong Mediterranean accent that was quite strong early on seems to have calmed down. The wine shows more of the serious Pingus character and is harmonious, balanced and elegant, perhaps because of the time it spent in oak vat (starting this year, it is not only in barrique). It feels very complete and intense but without weight or heaviness, and the fruit shows very clean and focused. Peter Sisseck compared it with the 2000, a wine that for him transcends the vintage; it showcases the balance (wines like 1996, 2000, 2012, 2016 and 2018). The quality of the tannins is stunning, which make the wine very elegant and balanced, and it has good freshness (even some red fruit!). This is exceptionally good, but somehow my heart didn't beat like with the wines he compared them with... 7,500 bottles were filled in July 2022.

Winemaking

Pingus is made exclusively from Tempranillo grapes sourced from carefully selected plots in Ribera del Duero.

Fermentation is carried out with great care, seeking precise extraction and respect for the fruit. Ageing takes place in oak barrels, where the wine gains complexity and structure.

Production is limited, and each vintage is crafted with the utmost attention to detail. Large volumes are not produced, which reinforces its exclusive character.

Vineyards

Barroso y San Cristóbal

The grapes come from vineyards located in Ribera del Duero, in the province of Burgos.

They are old vines, planted in soils characteristic of the area, which give the wine concentration and mineral character.

The continental climate, with cold winters and dry summers, favours the balanced ripening of Tempranillo.

The philosophy behind the work in the vineyard focuses on the careful selection of plots and respect for the expression of the terroir.
