The wine

Sela offers attractive youth alongside the character for which Bodegas Roda are famous. A relatively new wine but it is already a safe bet for both newcomers to the world of wine and for experienced fans of Rioja wines.

A fruity and juicy wine, fresh and succulent, made with grapes from sustainable vineyards ranging between 15 and 30 years old. It is ideal for drinking straight away thanks to a shorter ageing process than other wines from Bodegas Roda. Both its alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occur spontaneously in oak vats, and the resulting wine is then aged in semi-new French oak barrels. It is then stabilized naturally and clarified with an egg fining agent before being bottled.

It has a delightful intense cherry colour with ruby red glints, and a spicy and fruity nose of blackberries and cherries. Juicy in the mouth, it has a good body and tannins which, though still somewhat robust, point to a promising future although it can be enjoyed immediately. A lively acidity ensures it is well-balanced and displays the fine character typical of a Bodegas Roda wine. Herbal and balsamic tones over omnipresent fruit transmit a Mediterranean sensation which eventually blends with subtle hints of cocoa at its finish.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

They like the 2019 Sela, darker and more intense as a result of a warm and dry, low-yielding vintage, produced with the usual 94% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano and 3% Garnacha from 15- to 30-year-old vines and matured in French oak barrels for 12 months. It has 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.71. It's aromatic, expressive and open with notes of wild berries, herbs and spices and a medium to full-bodied palate with ripe, round tannins. Approachable. 95,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2021.

Bodegas Roda

Bodegas Roda

Bodegas Roda was founded in 1987 by Mario Rotllant and Carmen Daurella, who used their surnames to create the winery's name. It is located in the heart of the most historic area of Rioja wine — the Barrio de la Estación. The design of their modern 21st century building sits alongside the more classical style of neighbouring wineries, some of which are among the oldest wineries in Rioja. The harmony between the two styles is also found in the Roda wines, which bring together...
