The wine

An elegant and refined rosé wine in a similar style to those usually created in Provence, but with the added attraction of the famous owner of Château Miraval: the American actor Brad Pitt owns 50% of the property, with the other half owned by the international group Tenute del Mondo after Angelina Jolie sold her share of the business in 2021. The wines are made by the Perrin family, owners of Château de Beaucastel and one of the top producers of wines in the Rhône valley.

What does this wine taste like?

It has a wonderful pale pink colour with intense aromas of white flowers, small red berries and freshly-picked strawberries. Round and fresh in the mouth with a splendid balance between its minerality and fruity, citrus and wild herbal aromas. If left to stand in the glass for a while, delicate aromas of melon and mandarin orange peel appear while the mouthfeel gains in volume thanks, in part, to the low yield of the vines meaning the grapes are very concentrated. Flavours of fine spices delight in this saline and mineral wine; an exceptional rosé showing the same quality of the other wines created by Château de Beaucastel.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Jancis Robinson, and Suckling

Blended from estate and non-estate fruit, Miraval's 2020 Cotes de Provence Rose is a traditional blend of Cinsault, Grenache, Rolle (Vermentino) and Syrah, with a tiny proportion (about 5%) fermented in barrel. Whatever one may think about the movie star connection, there's no denying the technical expertise the Perrin family brings to the project, with this vintage offering up attractive notions of red berries, tangerine, peach and melon, all layered on a base of crushed stone. It's medium-bodied and fully dry, with a sense of elegant austerity on the finish.

The usual very pale salmon pink. A little sweeter than some of the other rosés reviewed here. Decent enough commercial stuff with light strawberry fruit but not as sophisticated nor as appetising as the Porte Noire 2019 selected by fellow actor Idris Elba. Seems a tad overpriced to me.

— Jancis Robinson (22/09/2020)JancisRobinson.com Vintage 2019 - 16 JANCIS ROBINSON

Lots of peach and light strawberry aromas with hints of lemons. Full to medium body, fresh acidity and a flavorful finish. Just the right amount of phenolic tension to make it interesting. Bright at the end. Drink now.

Vineyards

Grapes are collected from the Muriers, Longue and Romarin plots as well as a selection of vineyards located near the village of Correns, to the north of Brignoles, in the very heart of Provence. The vines are planted mainly in chalky-clay soils on terraces at around 350 metres altitude making the most of a slightly cooler climate whose significant day/night temperature differences favour an unhurried ripening process and a high concentration of aromas and flavours.

The exceptional terroir plays a key role in the character of Miraval Rosé, bringing minerality and freshness to the finished wine, created from a careful selection of Cinsaut, Grenache, Syrah and Rolle (a very aromatic grape known as Vermentino in Sardinia where it is widely-planted).
