The wine

Compañía de Vinos de Telmo Rodríguez produces wines in various Spanish appellations using local varieties from the regions in question. And in DO Toro that obviously means Tinta de Toro, the grape they use to create wonderful wines like Pago La Jara, Dehesa Gago, and Gago, a fine wine brimming with character and expressing all the strength of this variety.

Gago is made using grapes from Tinta de Toro goblet-pruned vines growing in gravel and sandstone based soils using traditional vine-growing methods. The wine ages for 14 months in wooden foudres bought in the year 2000 which respect the wine without adding aromas and flavours.

Gago is a pure and fresh wine, with a well-defined personality. A wine characterized by a strong presence of fruit but also by its delicacy. It shows none of the rusticity sometimes linked to Toro wines, but it will delight all wine-lovers of this region's wines with its focus on elegance above concentration.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The grapes for the Toro red 2019 Gago were picked from mid-September in an early harvest when the wine ripened to 14.4% alcohol and a pH of 3.8. The grapes come from the villages of Argujillo, Villabuena del Puente and Morales de Toro and were fermented in oak and stainless steel vats and matured for 14 months in oak foudres, with 20% of the volume in barriques. There is finesse within the power and the ripe and concentrated vintage. It's juicy and lush, with abundant, grainy tannins. It needs powerful food. 40,695 bottles produced. It was bottled in May and June 2020.

Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza started work on their wine project in 1994 with, as they admit, few resources but plenty of ideas. The firm they set up, Compañía de Vinos de Telmo Rodríguez, has grown based on the pair's travels around winemaking regions to understand and experience Spain as a complex and unique winemaking country with incredibly diverse and rich landscapes.   Top quality winemaking traditions, experience in...
