The wine

Finca Xaconero is a fresh, wild and mineral wine with intense floral aromas of violets, created using the very best Monastrell grapes from the eponymous vineyard located in Villena within the Alicante DO appellation. Grapes have been grown here ever since the 16th century and the area was given its original name, Xarco de Enero (January pool), due to the intense autumn and winter rainfall it experienced.

Although Syrah and Red Grenache also play a discrete role in the blend, the true star behind the wine is the Monastrell, which brings aromas of lavender and bay leaves to every glass. Ageing for a year in wood rounds off its already sweet tannins and gives it an extra dose of elegance and harmony. Non-intense toasted aromas from the barrel staves respect perfectly the primary and juicy character of the fruit, making it expressive and moreish in the mouth, but also easy to interpret. Native yeasts; some whole grapes in the vinification process; infusion, rather than extraction, of the grape skins ... it all comes together to explain the elegance and transparency enjoyed in each glass of Finca Xaconero.

Its ruby-cherry colour catches the wine-lover's eye while its nose of Mediterranean forest aromas (pine trees and sage) ensure we remember its origins. The eastern coast of Spain and its wine traditions are always present, alongside the deep winemaking knowledge and utmost respect for the land and its fruit expressed by the winery. A blend of extremely complex and unusual sensations, especially in this price range.

Enrique Mendoza Viticultor

Enrique Mendoza started out in the world of wine in the 1970s when he planted about 2,000 Muscat vines in a plot near the coast in his hometown of Alfás del Pi (Alicante) following the winemaking tradition of the Marina Baixa region. Enrique's first wines were aimed at the local market and for bulk selling. After these beginnings he extended his properties, taking on the Finca Chaconero estate in Villena in 1989. Here he cultivates 80 hectares of vines ranging from international...
