The wine

Undergrowth, fruit and minerality welcome us to Priorat. Every glass of Coma Vella contains sensations of a springtime walk through Mediterranean woodland and the fresh and intense balance and wonderful silkiness so characteristic of Mas d'en Gil wines.

What does this wine taste like?

Expressive, powerful, mature and polished, Coma Vella is a harmonious red wine with well-developed aromas and subtle flavours. It expresses the magic of Priorat alongside the elegance and balance it has gained from time in the bottle, with a measured maturity common in the style of southern Priorat wines. Spicy with a medium-bodied palate and elegantly rustic tannins which evoke sensations of the dusty paths around the Priorat hillsides. With perfectly-integrated oak, the final result is a truly impressive, dry, serious and mineral wine.

Winemaking

Made mainly from Grenache grapes with some Carignan and Syrah from vines planted between 1965 and 1998 and 20 hl/ha yields. Between 10 and 20% of grapes are used as whole bunches with stems. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels with local yeast. The wine ages for 14 months in a combination of 225-litre barrels and 1,500 and 3,000-litre oak vats, only 15 to 20% of which are new. The finished wine is left to stand and age in the bottle for a further 24 months.

Vineyards

Coma Vella del Valle de La Coma.

The wine gets its name from the Coma Vella llicorellas (a local slate) vineyard, the oldest plot in the La Coma valley. Hairy Grenache and Red Grenache vines planted from east to west looking towards the Mediterranean receive the beneficial influence of the smooth and refreshing sea breeze known locally as garbi.

Viticultors Mas d'en Gil

The realisation of a dream, “bottling the land”, and a reality: a company run by Pere Rovira and his daughters, showing their passion, tradition and sincerity. Mas d’en Gil is situated in the southern part of the Priorat, where the Garnacha takes precedence over the Cariñena, more typical of the northern area. The location is known as the Priorat’s “botanical garden”, due to the presence of small clumps of lavender and rosemary bushes growing amongst the vines. Mas d’en Gil...
