Three grapes 

Spain is a land of Tempranillo and Grenache, prestigious red grapes behind many great Spanish wines. But it is also a land of variety, a country with excellent local varieties which, for different reasons, are not so well-known as these two star grapes. With this selection we aim to help you discover, or rediscover, three of these lesser-known yet wonderful varieties: Prieto Picudo, Bobal and Graciano.

The Prieto Picudo variety is originally from the region of León in the north of Spain. It reached its maximum popularity in the seventeenth century but has been used less and less ever since then. A good level of acidity makes it a splendid grape for using in the production of rosés and semi-sparkling wines and nowadays it is also used for excellently fresh and fruity red wines.

Bobal is one of the best red grapes from south-east Spain (Levante) but has also travelled successfully to other areas such as Castile-La Mancha. It creates very colourful wines, though the intensity fades away as they age in wood. Delightfully floral and herbal, fruity and spicy aromas accompany a well-balanced and structured palate.

Last, but not least, we look at the Graciano grape, a variety which is believed to have originated in the area now covered by the La Rioja and Navarre appellations. Its small grapes produce a deep red must with a good level of acidity, tannins and a notable alcohol content. It is often blended with other grapes but when used to make a varietal wine, it can create an unforgettable experience.
