The wine

The result of the Red Winemaking Trial (RWT), a project started back in 1995, with the first release being the 1997 vintage in 2000. The idea was to incorporate progress made in viticulture and winemaking techniques, and look for the maximum expression of balance, ripeness and flavour from the Shiraz grape.

Independent growers in the west and north-west of the Barossa Valley are the main providers of this single region wine, a perfect example of its terroir, sourced from vineyards ranging in age between 20-100 years old. Fruit selection is based on aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than intense, powerful flavour. This has created a RWT style, opulent and fleshy, enhanced by French oak in maturation, and differentiating it from Grange where American oak is preferred.

Dark red in colour, the nose displays aromas of dark fruits (blueberries and plums) intermingling with summer berry compote, spicy hints and a touch of coffee. Dense, unctuous, full-flavoured with lush fruit and fine tannins.

Aged for 13 months in around 70% new and 30% French oak barrels.

Englishman Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary bought the Magill Estate in 1844, soon after arriving in Australia. The 500 acres of Grenache were used to start making fortified wines which would be prescribed as a remedy for combating anaemia. In 1870, the couple...
