The wine

Rubesco Vigna Monticchio by Lungarotti is one of the red wines that is part of the legend of Italian wine. It is a red from Umbria, a region of spectacular hills and villages that can compete with anything from Tuscany.

Including the wine. Vigna Monticchio is a sort of Chianti red moved into Umbria, with an important refinement in wood that makes it one of the most awarded wines in Italy and in the world. A full-bodied, but elegant, velvety, complete and long-lived red wine.

Every year it receives the highest national and international awards. Gambero Rosso, Bibenda and the Italian Sommelier Association have agreed for years to award Monticchio the highest scores.

An Italian red wine which is a symbol of the territory and what the Lungarotti family has given and received from the Torgiano area. All the best that Umbria expresses, all the best that Italy express in a single label.

What does this wine taste like?

Rubesco Vigna Monticchio is a red wine with a warm and intense profile made from single-variety Sangiovese grapes. Elegant and with a solidly structure, it has a deep ruby colour and a complex bouquet reminiscent of morello cherry and blackberry, delicate hints of violet and light mentholated notes and a spicy finish.

Over the years, it evolves towards a garnet colour and expresses all the class of Sangiovese for ageing. In fact, it expresses evolved notes of bitter cocoa, sweet tobacco and goudron, with ethereal and enamel puffs.

Highly concentrated, fruity and slightly balsamic, it expresses a harmonious and balanced progression in its youth. It has soft, velvety tannins and a long, persistent finish. It manages to perfectly balance pleasantness and austerity, thanks to the class and freshness of Sangiovese.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Suckling, Parker, and Jancis Robinson

Very pleasant sangiovese from Umbria here, with lots of nutty cherry and berry character. Full and lightly firm with a relaxed core of fruit, lightly firm tannins and enough acidity to keep it going. The nutty character prevails on the long finish. Interesting. Enjoy now or hold.

Earthy and savory, with scorched soil on top of dark cherry and dried blackberry, the 2016 Torgiano Rosso Riserva Rubesco Vigna Monticchio is streamlined, focused and tight compared to the open-knit 2015 vintage that I tasted at the same time. Showing faint mineral tones, these vines planted among tobacco fields (for making Toscano cigars) have a distinctive smoky or savory quality. This is an Umbrian classic of some 35,000 bottles produced annually.

Lustrous mid ruby. Elegant, fine and concentrated nose with minerally, chalky notes and leafy cherry. Succulent red-fruit palate but still very embryonic and with intense long powdery tannins. Elegant palate weight defying the 14.5% alcohol. Not ready yet.
