Review:

Victorino is valour and powerfulness, harmony and elegance, balance and nobility; a homage to ancestors, in particular to Don Victorino, grandfather of Marcos and Miguel, and in general to the land of Toro and its grape, the Tinta de Toro.

Summary of Marcos Eguren's evaluation of the 2014 vintage in Toro

The weather in 2013 concluded with an autumn of mild temperatures, rainy conditions and some frosts which ended up by being really severe in the final weeks. The year took its leave with low temperatures and a considerable amount of fog, which seemed to foretell what was to come in the first months of 2014: January and February were cold months with continual rainfall, not much in quantity but definitely persistent. It was a cold start to the year.

Spring offered more moderate temperatures, still however with some morning frosts, and the rains cleared up. At the beginning of April, budding commenced on the old vines but it wasn’t until May that this became widespread among the rest of the plants and again, a significant drop in the temperatures and rainfall in the middle of May resulted in flowering being slowed down; also fruit set in June was to be longer than in a normal year. The vines developed properly but slowly.

The month of July notched up some high temperatures, which allowed the onset of ripening (also some dehydration), although it continued being a cooler month than average compared with other years. August finally enabled optimum development of the plants and a small amount of rain at the start of September refreshed the vines and improved the maturation factors. The harvest took place between September 12th and 29th, interspersed with the odd localised shower affecting certain areas.

Toro, Spain

The Eguren family, originally from La Rioja, discovered Toro and has stayed with it, persuaded by the land’s potential and by the Tinta de Toro, a grape with great structure, able to convey the minerality of the soils but with a strong character that needs understanding and “taming”. Marcos...
