The wine

Aldo Rainoldi Sassella is a little gem from the Valtellina. A wine that on entry seems quite unassuming and understated, but in reality conceals a precious work of art. It isn't an exuberant wine, but it is profound, and somehow it harbours wisdom and mystery... as savvy and mysterious are the Nebbiolo grapes that grow in this region, the most northerly in which we can find this variety.

Even when aware of the pale colouring of Nebbiolo grapes, this wine's orangey hues still come as a surprise, a very evolved tone, suggesting a mature wine. On the nose it appears a little reticent at first, changing shortly afterwards, until it reveals itself completely. It certainly has terrific richness for a wine in this price range! The fruit is red and very ripe, aromas of strawberries and cherries enveloped in a perfume of flowers and menthol notes, with lactic touches, hints of leather, orange peel as well as other very juicy white fruits, possibly pears? It's a really juicy wine and extremely drinkable. Don't underestimate its apparent lightness in body and smoothness, because it has sinew and a good fibrous structure. Very palatable and with well-defined acidity, most inviting, leaving a very elegant feeling of rusticity on the palate, and suggestions of damp earth and herb infusions which remind us of a woodland walk in autumn, mingling with dusty aromas as though we were leafing through an ancient tome, with its pages turning yellow too owing to the passage of time. Pick up your wine glass and peruse all the secrets of this delicious Valtellina contained in the glass.
