Details for Pio Cesare Barolo 2016
Review
The Pio Cesare cellar was founded in 1881 and today it is the only remaining one in Alba, the capital of the Langhe. In addition to this historical fact, and the figure of Pio Cesare himself, the winery is famous for being one of the first, in the second half of the nineteenth century, to believe in the great potential of Langaroli, Barolo and Babaresco wines at the top of the list.
Pio Cesare's Barolo is a classic product with an indefinable essence of modernity: as per tradition, it all stems from the grapes coming from the plots of Serralunga d'Alba, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra, Barolo, Novello, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte. The wine, after a traditional long fermentation, matures for over three years both in French oak barriques and larger capacity barrels, ideally combining tradition and innovation.
The result is a balanced wine, characterised by firm but measured tannins, a frank and ready interpretation of this extraordinary Nebbiolo. On the nose it successfully achieves harmony between sweet notes of dried plum and jams and fresher notes, including balsamic and liquorice, while the taste is clean, refined and persistent, approachable in youth but extraordinarily fulfilling.
