The wine

This magical wine is made with the produce of the Espanillo vineyard, the jewel in the crown of the Mengoba winery. These vines are over 80 years old, high up in the mountains growing in rocky soils made up of mainly fragmented and decomposed slate. Hand-crafted viticulture at work in this oxen-ploughed vineyard brings together biodynamic philosophy with Mencia, Alicante Bouschet, Estaladiña and Godello grapes. This wine then ages for eleven months in a 400-litre French oak foudre. It is not filtered.

Mengoba Mencía de Espanillo is a direct and rustic wine with a strong character. A true Mencia wine, well complemented with the freshness of the Alicante Bouschet and Godello grapes. A fragrant wine with notes of blue flowers, bilberries, cherries, and aromatic herbs, mixed with spicy and smoky hints. It has a medium-bodied palate with the freshness of red fruit, and makes for a long-lasting, lively and tantalizing wine.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

Once again, I tasted the impressive 2018 Mencía de Espanillo that I already tasted last time, and it was interesting to see how different it was from the 2019 Mengoba, which is also from Espanillo and contains a similar blend of Mencía, Alicante Bouschet and white grapes. This has lots of finesse and perfume; it's refined and there's no rusticity or earthiness. It's floral and elegant, still young and fresh, aging at a very slow pace. It's 13.5% alcohol and has nice balance with the tannins and acidity. 4,000 bottles were filled in April 2020.

Bodegas y Viñedos Mengoba

Mengoba is the winery personally run by Gregory Pérez, a real enthusiast within his profession, and today a benchmark in the Bierzo region. Starting out in 1998 at the Château Cos d'Estounel, Gregory learnt the practical art of pruning and wine-growing at the hands of Guy Mallet. In Spain, he formed part of the team at Luna Beberide and was one of the creators of Paixar, one of Bierzo’s best wines. The vineyards of Bodegas Mengoba extend over Espanillo,...
