La Fredat

La Fredat is one of the most special wines produced by Casa Gran del Siurana, the Priorat winery within the Perelada Group offering us a range which extends from the accessible, juicy and luscious GR-174 to the majestic Gran Cruor and Gran Cruor Caranyana, and on to the delicious Cruor. In this instance, a single varietal Garnacha, made from a selection of the finest Garnacha grapes grown on the estate that gives the wine its name: La Fredat, a mountain vineyard cultivated on terraces and slopes with their slate soils in Bellmunt del Priorat.

The grapes are harvested by hand, and after fermentation and the subsequent twelve months of ageing in French oak, it turns into a wine that's a deep Picota cherry colour with a spicy, toasty and liqueur-tinged nose. It combines all the merits of the Perelada Group's wines, since, under the supervision of Delfí Sanahuja, one of Spain's most renowned winemakers, it comes over as unpretentious and, against the prevailing trend, as a wine in which the oak plays a leading role, preparing it for a long journey in time. In addition to the roasted aromas there are hints of tree bark, wild strawberry jam and mint.

On the palate, La Fredat is balanced and sweetly succulent, and its elegant tannins confer a refined structure. Decanting is a good idea, since it grows considerably with aeration.
