Review:

The Viña Sastre winery is located in the town of La Horra within the D.O. Ribera del Duero appellation, and home to some of the oldest vineyards in the area. It is a reference winery in this region, renowned for both its traditional range of wines (Rosado, Roble, and Crianza) and its high-quality range (Pago Santa Cruz, Acos, Regina Vides, and the legendary Pesus wine of which only 1,800 bottles are produced each year selling at very high prices). The Viña Sastre philosophy is a humble and simple one; a family-owned winery working the vines with organic and biodynamic techniques and a respect for the land and plants, just like their parents and grandparents did before them. Neither mineral fertilizers nor pesticides or weedkillers are used on the land. They also make the most of the cold temperatures in La Horra to help filter the wine naturally.

Although white wines cannot receive the official D.O Ribera del Duero certificate, the Flavus wine is one of the most unique whites from this region. It is a wine that is difficult to come by as it isn't produced every year because all the old white grape vines they use are interspersed among the old Tempranillo vines and must be harvested separately, one at a time. The Albillo grape is the most famous one in this area but Flavus is made from the Jaén (or Cayetana Blanca) variety. The main thing is that these vines are an expression of the soil they grow in. The production of this wine is limited to a maximum of 6,000 bottles.

Grapevines between 60 and 100 years old, cultivated in calcareous clay soil, provide us with Flavus, an interesting wine to get to know. It has an excellent acidity and plenty of fruit, with a background of fruit in syrup and mountain herbs, and notes of white flowers. Consistent and velvety on the palate, this wine is powerful and flavoursome.
