It is no easy job to find wines made with Hairy Grenache, especially if you are looking for a single-variety wine, and it becomes a virtually impossible task if you are after an inexpensive one. However, this Almodí wine does fulfill these conditions — it's an exceptional high-quality single-variety Hairy Grenache wine at a price hard to believe.
Hairy Grenache vines are grown in Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Alicante, and the south of France. Due to its supposed vegetable profile, this variety fell out of use for many years, but modern day oenology allows winemakers to use it to develop wines full of personality where wild fruit aromas win out against vegetable ones, and its delicateness and elegance come to the forefront of the wine. The rather peculiar name of this grape comes from the hairy or furry underside of the vine leaves.
The Almodí is a red wine from the Terra Alta region combining all the qualities of the great Hairy Grenache plants in old vineyards. Its aroma is seductive, soothing, and purely Mediterranean. You'll find overtones of scrub-bush alongside notes of wild fruit. On the palate, it is juicy and strong, but fine, full and elegant. On airing, hints of blue flowers, liquorice, fine toast and dust appear. The wine's tannins are somewhat rustic but balanced, and its pleasant volume captivates you. Flavours of blackberry jam and peppers become more evident with time, rounding off a wine with aromas usually associated to a higher price range.

Einer der interessantesten Rotweine aus Terra Alta
Der „Almodí 2017“ von „Altavins“ in Batea ist einer der interessantesten Rotweine aus Terra Alta. Nicht von Nachteil ist dabei ein in seiner Minimalistik bestechend schönes Etikett; auch sein arabischer Name und dessen Bezug zu Batea erweckt Neugierde. „Almodí“ ist dabei als Hinweis gedacht auf die Einflüsse der Mauren auf Wirtschaft, Kultur und Sprache in dieser Region. Ursprünglich die Bezeichnung eines Getreidelagers, wurde in Batea später der gesamte Markt „Almodí“ genannt. Jedoch: Das Hauptinteresse sollte vor allem auf dem Inhalt der Flasche liegen. Altavins „Almodí“ ist nämlich einer der seltenen reinsortigen „Garnatxa Peludas“, aufgrund der rauen Blattunterseite auch „haarige Garnatxa“ genannt. Sie erfährt gerade eine Renaissance und kommt, wenn überhaupt, hochpreisig auf den Markt. Der „Almodí“ indessen ist erschwinglich, und er überzeugt. Im Glas glänzendes Rubinrot; in der Nase expressive Aromen, dunkle Beeren, Anis, Vanille, Toast; angenehm und mollig im Mund, erfrischendes Fruchtkompott, feine Tannine, würzig, leichtes Holz. Eine Entdeckung.

Die bestechend schönen Etiketten von „Altavins“ mit ihren verhuschten Buchstaben machen geradezu neugierig auf die Weine des innovativen Weinguts in Batea. Zum Beispiel auf den „Almodi“, der zwar nur ein „kleiner Wein“ ist, aber dennoch zu den interessantesten Rotweinen aus Terra Alta zählt. Sein Name erinnert an die Spuren der Mauren in Wirtschaft, Kultur und Sprache dieser Region: Zunächst lediglich die Bezeichnung eines Getreidelagers, wurde in Batea später der gesamte Marktbereich „Almodí“ genannt. Was den „Almodi“ in der Flasche betrifft, lohnt sich der Blick auf die Rebsorte. Der „Almodi“ ist nämlich einer der wenigen sortenreinen „Garnatxa Peludas“, auch „haarige Garnatxa“ genannt. Sie ist nach der „Morenillo“ die spannendste rote Rebsorte in Terra Alta, und erlebt gerade eine bemerkenswerte Renaissance. Auch der „Almodí 2018“ überzeugt. Im Glas expressive Aromen, dunkle Beeren, Anis, Vanille, Lakritze; angenehm weich und mollig im Mund, erfrischend fruchtig, würzig, wenig Holz, streichelnde Tannine. Leise, unaufgeregt, sehr einnehmend.
