The wine

Bodegas Lecea is located in the town of San Asensio, in the heart of the Rioja Alta, between Cenicero and Haro. Many generations of wine-making tradition illustrate the Lecea spirit. The traditional natural stone cellar caves (calados) dating back 500 years are still to be found here, with labyrinths of passages and chambers where the wine is vinified and stored at an ideal temperature and humidity level.

Luis Alberto makes whites using Viura and Chardonnay fermented in barrel, claretes, young reds, carbonic maceration reds, a Crianza, a Reserva and a Gran Reserva. And the pure spirit of his Lecea Reserva shines through, a wine that has retained its essence after the passage of countless years. The ruby and brick-red hues of those Rioja wines before modern times express themselves freely in this wine, without fearing any competition from the new generation with their Picota cherry colour and violet hues. The years don’t really pass at Lecea! It’s a matter of tradition, classicism and an enthusiasm for upholding inherited ancestral ways.

Leather, plums, good brettanomyces, and the smells of wood and old cellars are some of the aromatic features of this exquisite Reserva, an impressive nose which reproduces to perfection those Riojas of old. On the palate, the only point to make is that it is pure and delicate ecstasy, with some stout yet well-melded tannins, all underpinned by good and not in the least bothersome acidity.

The Lecea Reserva, a wine with a captivating spirit.
