Sweet Hungarian wine
The most famous Hungarian wine is Tokaji, a botrytised wine classified according to its level of sweetness: 3, 4, 5 or 6 Puttonyos, up to the most concentrated and sweetest, the Eszencia Tokaji. The term Aszú shown on the label refers to the dehydrated berries and the Puttonyos are the 25-kilo wooden containers or hods used for harvesting the grapes (the number of hods of Aszú grapes used will equal the number of Puttonyos given, for each 136 litres of must). Some Tokajis are made using all the grapes on the vine, whether they have been affected by noble rot or not, and in this case, they are known by the name Szamorodni; a wine undergoing the sweet production process is called a Szamorodni Édes, and when produced as a dry wine it’s a Szamorodni Száraz. There are also late harvest Hungarian dessert wines, which are less sweet. Don’t forget to add a Hungarian sweet wine when shopping at Vinissimus!
