The wine

For their top of the range product, the winery has settled upon the Graciano grape, content that a pure expression of this variety has been obtained that shows great complexity and aromatic freshness. A manual grape harvest into 12-kilo crates and individual berries destalked by hand pave the way for the end result, a refined and elegant wine.

Dark violet in colour, this wine reveals aromas of ripe black fruits on the nose, complemented by hints of vanilla, roast coffee, spices and pepper. On the palate, cherry and cassis come through clearly, along with spicy notes. It concludes with a lengthy and firm finish.

Fermented in oak vats. Aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

This year, the eponymous red 2017 Exopto is an unusual blend of 60% Graciano, 30% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha to lower the pH and provide freshness, from a challenging and Mediterranean vintage when the blend reached 14.5% alcohol while keeping good freshness. It fermented in 225-liter oak barrels, where it also matured, but he lowered the new oak to 30%, and 75% of the volume matured in 500-liter oak barrels. I still notice some effect of the élevage in the nose and in the texture of the wine, which displays ripe fruit and some dusty tannins. 2,500 bottles were filled in April 2019.

Bodegas Exopto

Tom Puyaubert arrived in Spain early in the year 2000 from his native Bordeaux, as a sales rep for a famous French cooperage, but coming into daily contact with some of the country’s best winemakers made him feel not only more passionate about wine but also in particular for La Rioja, its vineyards, its wine-growing culture... In 2003 he founded Bodegas Exopto and since then his project has continued to make good progress, producing wines with personality, always using...
