The wine

El Escocés Volante Manga del Brujo 2021 is an exceptional red wine from the Calatayud region of Aragón, Spain. Produced by the Scottish winemaker Norrel Robertson, known as ‘The Flying Scotsman’, this wine stands out for its distinctive character and its artisanal production, which combines tradition and modernity.

To the eye, it has an intense ruby red colour with violet highlights, indicating its youth and freshness. On the nose, it displays a complex and seductive aromatic profile, dominated by notes of ripe red and black fruits, such as cherries, raspberries and blackberries, accompanied by floral hints of violets and subtle spicy nuances of pepper and liquorice. Delicate mineral notes, characteristic of the region's terroir, are also perceptible.

On the palate, Manga del Brujo 2021 is a balanced and well-structured wine. Its tannins are soft and well integrated, providing a silky and pleasant texture. The lively and fresh acidity enhances the fruity and spicy flavours, while the palate is round and persistent, with a long and harmonious finish that leaves an elegant reminder of fruit and spices.

This wine is perfect to accompany a variety of dishes, from grilled meats and stews to cured meats and cheeses.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The 2020 Manga del Brujo is an unoaked red blend produced with 70% old-vine Garnacha, 15% Syrah, 10% Bobal (instead of the Tempranillo used before) and 5% Mazuelo (Cariñena). It fermented and matured exclusively in epoxy-lined concrete tanks. It has an expressive nose, with abundant notes of aromatic herbs and the approachability of the 2020s. The texture felt softer (is it the Bobal?), and it's ripe (15% alcohol), juicy and with volume and concentration, more extraction than Papa Luna, a bit more serious. The final blend was waiting for the bottles, and there was enough wine to fill some 90,000 bottles that should get bottled from October–November 2021. They produced this wine in 2018 but skipped 2019, so 2020 will be the next vintage.

El Escocés Volante

El Escocés Volante is the personal project of the Scottish oenologist and Master of Wine, Norrel Robertson. Norrel and his family came to Spain in 2003 and by 2004 he was already producing his first wine in the DO Calatayud appellation. Over 25 years of experience in the winemaking business were reflected in his very first bottle and ever since then the popularity of his wines has risen even further. It was back in 1990 when Norrel, with his passion for wine, started to work...
