Review
The Cagnulari is a red grape which was probably grown extensively in Sardinia throughout the 17th Century but nowadays is found restricted to an area in the province of Sassari. On the clay and chalky soils of this sunny spot, specifically in Usini, producer Giovanni Cherchi carried out a restoration programme of ancient varieties. This has enabled him to increase in number the few Cagnulari vines with the aim of producing a single varietal wine so that this variety can be enjoyed in all its purity. A quality wine - straightforward, typical and local.
In the glass it appears a bright and intense ruby colour and emanates aromas of red fruits (ripe redcurrants, strawberries and raspberries), plums, blackberries, geraniums and leather. A whiff of white roses endows it with a feminine note and the character of the terroir emerges exuberantly through hints of Mediterranean bushes. On the palate it appears full and pleasant, flavoursome and fresh, with an agreeable smoothness recalling the ripe fruit. A most appealing wine with a lovely flavour, a bottle that will steal your heart.
