The wine

The first edition of this tribute wine came out in 1989. Since then, only 18 vintages have had the privilege of becoming a Hommage à Jacques Perrin. François and Jean-Pierre had wanted to pay homage to their father, Jacques, who had a huge influence on them.

It was the first wine produced outside Bordeaux to be distributed by Bordeaux négociants. Only the five premier négociants of the so-called "Place de Bordeaux" hold the distribution rights of this prestigious cuvée.

Hommage à Jacques Perrin ages in large casks and is bottled later than the Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This is a dense and full-bodied, concentrated wine with an immense aromatic richness dominated by the aromas of wild berries, undergrowth and liquorice. Enveloping on the palate, with firm but accessible tannins which enable it to be enjoyed right from its early years in bottle. Smoky, leather and inky hints. Profound, concentrated and muscly, it leaves in the memory an amazing recollection of acacia flowers and laurel.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Jancis Robinson, and Suckling

As this was bottled only a week before I tasted it, I suspect this rating will prove to be conservative once a few months have passed. The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is another prodigious version of this wine. How many wines in this world can be so huge yet so lacking the feeling of weight? There's plenty of layered spice but also a core of raspberries; rich tannins, yet no real astringency; and a long finish without any apparent heat. Wow!

— Joe Czerwinski (31/10/2017)Robert Parker Wine Advocate Vintage 2015 - 98 PARKER

Exquisite raspberry fruit on the nose, then a surprisingly savoury palate with bitter cherry, firm tannin, full body, grainy tannin and fresh acidity. This is potent stuff that manages to be big in every dimension without being overworked. Very canny winemaking, with impeccable fruit purity.

A more savory, moody, strong expression. Deeply rich nose with minerals, flowers, wild herbs, tar, toasted spices and pepper. The dark berries have a smoky edge. Minerally edge, too, thanks to the 60 per cent mourvèdre. The palate has glossy, ripe and super-fine tannins in sheets. Deep-set, dark plums and blueberries in the finish. Noble tannins. Age-worthy.

The winery

Château de Beaucastel

In the year 1321, in the time of Pope John XXII, four casks from the papal cellar arrived in Châteauneuf to be filled with wine; that was how the story started of "du-Pape" wine. The history of the Château de Beaucastel, located in the most northerly part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, dates back to 1549, when Pierre de Beaucastel bought a barn and some land in Coudoulet. The winery has belonged to the Perrin family since 1909, and today the project is under the direction...
