Niepoort Vinhos

Niepoort is an unquestionable reference point for wines from Portugal, and particularly well-known for its Port wines, whose excellence especially with regard to vintage Ports, has put it on the same level as the Maison Krug regarding Champagnes ('Niepoort is to vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne', once declared James Suckling of the Wine Spectator). For some years now the winery has also been making great white and red wines, which are considered among the most remarkable of the Douro region.

Dutch in origin and family-run, Niepoort now has the fifth generation heading up the business. Dirk van der Niepoort, in charge of directing winery operations today, consistently upholds the company philosophy of little intervention and is committed to a viticulture based on old vines and low yields, and to some traditional practices, such as harvesting when the tasted grapes suggest the time is right or using the press for treading, to maximize extraction and bring out the fruit's tannic qualities. The end result produces Port wines which, while still being accessible, conceal ripe, supple and lush tannins that impart character.

In the last decade, the winery's dry wines, made in the Douro region, have successfully combined elegance and finesse with the personality of the different terroirs and now enjoy high regard both among wine critics and the consumer market.
