René Barbier

In 1870 phylloxera devastated French vineyards, including those of the Barbier family. In the wine-growing areas, wages were halved, businesses collapsed, and a large part of the population emigrated to other countries, such as Spain. For this reason, Léon Barbier, the son of vineyard owners from the Avignon region, settled in Catalonia, establishing his company in Tarragona in 1880.

Léon Barbier was the first to sell his wines in bottles. He applied his knowledge of the treatment of grapes, according to the French tradition, to the Catalan climate and soil. He realised that with the use of Spanish varieties, it was possible to obtain high quality wines with an unquestionable personality and thus obtain great success.

His son René consolidated the quality of the wines and distributed them all over the world. The results were magnificent red, white and rosé wines of the highest quality. His famous cabernet and chardonnay wines, whites and rosés, and the young and reserva reds are particularly noteworthy.

The winery is located between the coastal hills and the narrow plains of the Mediterranean coast, in the heart of the central depression, where the vines of the Penedès region grow and mature. The influence of the Mediterranean and the sun make the Penedès region an area with a temperate and warm climate, very suitable for growing vines.
