Condado de Haza

In the mid 1980s, Alejandro Fernández came across a south-facing hillside, gently sloping down to the banks of the River Duero, that encompassed exactly the right conditions for growing some of the region's best Tempranillo vines, and producing complex, balanced wines that exemplified this grape variety's finest traits and nuances. It took three years of hard negotiating to acquire the various small plots on the hillside, but by 1989 the first 80 hectares had been planted, and now the estate totals 200.

At first, the Tinto Pesquera wine-making facilities were used, but the 1994 vintage saw this second winery project take off as a separate unit. In 1995, Condado de Haza became totally self-sufficient, and Alejandro Fernández had realized his dream of converting some impressive buildings lying amidst the vineyards into the Spanish equivalent of a fully-operational, wine-producing château in the French style.

Highly regarded and renowned the world over, this talented winemaker first showed his credentials with Tinto Pesquera. His careful treatment of the Tempranillo grape variety helped put the Ribera del Duero on the Spanish wine-making map in the early 1980s, and the considerable experience and expertise gained over the years has resulted in a showcase of top quality wines.

Condado de Haza forms part of the Pesquera Group, which are wineries owned by Alejandro Fernández: Tinto Pesquera (Ribera del Duero), Dehesa la Granja (Castile-León) and El Vínculo (Castile-La Mancha).
