Review

Produced with the 2019 harvest, García Viadero from the Valduero winery, is the first white wine with the DO Ribera del Duero label. It is made from the local Albillo Mayor variety which, despite its extraordinary quality, had almost disappeared from use. In fact it was used only for the famous claret wines in the 1980s or to add balance to table wines. However, since the European Union authorized its use officially in this appellation in July 2019, it is now possible to create white wines with this interesting grape under the DO Ribera del Duero label.

An early-ripening grape with fine dark yellow skins, it is capable of producing wines with a wonderful expression of the fruit and a balanced acidity, as the excellent García Viadero shows. The bush vines are relatively young and not irrigated and the only fertilizer used is sheep manure resulting in magnificent grapes which are hand-harvested during the first week in October and fermented at controlled temperatures to ensure the wine has superb aromas.

Each bottle of this original white wine delights with a straw-yellow coloured wine with a lush nose of pineapple, grapefruits and peaches. Its surprising strength in the mouth brings to mind a barrel-aged wine but it is not the case. It displays a light acidity thanks to the vineyards being planted at altitudes of over 800 metres. This compensates for the wine's body leading to a very well-balanced drink. Yeast can be noted both in the nose and in its seductive feel, while new aromas such as hints of apple appear as it sits in the glass. It is also a wine which ages wonderfully, bringing out sweet apple sensations which develop into baked apples. Smoke and a fine touch of biscuits embellish an original and lingering finish. The final result — a splendid round wine with a great personality.

Bodegas Valduero

Created by Gregorio García Álvarez in 1984, Valduero is a family-run winery in the small village of Gumiel del Mercado (Burgos) and was one of the first wineries to be founded in the D.O. Ribera del Duero appellation. Gregorio García and his two daughters, Yolanda and Carolina, have developed a robust project based on three key factors: their own low-yield vineyards producing top quality grapes, a unique winery, and paying special attention to customers' preferences and to th...
