An ancient Friulian red grape variety, it probably originates between the Karst and Istria. It is considered one of the noblest grape varieties in a region that, moreover, excels especially for white wines. Slightly late but vigorous and constant, it gives wines of deep ruby colour, with intense and fruity scents, full of morello cherries and berries. The structure is generally full, with a never too intrusive tannin and a nice bitterish trail on the finish. It can withstand certain ageing both in wood and in the bottle, indeed the practice is recommended to smooth out the acidity and tannin which, when young youth, can be quite nervous and churlish.
